Emerson College

Emerson is a college of creatives and storytellers (with some pretty great stories to share!). Expression is a publication produced for 51,000+ alumni and friends of Emerson College. With new leadership and a recently completed rebrand of the college, Expression magazine was looking for smart, photo-driven design reflecting who Emerson is and who Emerson aspires to be.

Stoltze Design was thrilled to be selected to partner with the Office of Communications and Marketing to completely redesign the publication including new typography, color palette, approach to imagery, and a new masthead.

Starting with the cover, we landed on a vertical nameplate that is suggestive of an exclamation mark, but also works well horizontally on the digital version of the magazine. A colorful layered collage approach to the cover was a great way to unify the wide variety of alumni portraits we were provided. The interior of the magazine relies less on illustrations and more on photography than the previous design. Tom Kates provided the wonderful portraits for the Nicolas Heller ’11 and Colu Henry ’99 features.
