Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) ranks as one of the preeminent schools of dental medicine in the country. Founded in 1867, HSDM has a proud history of educating clinicians, dental educators, researchers, and leaders in the profession.
Harvard Dental, the School’s biannual publication, has been published in various iterations for many decades. In 2021, Stoltze Design Group was enlisted to redesign the magazine and give it a fresh and modern look and feel, and a new layout that enhances the presentation of content. As part of the redesign process, considerations were also made for how elements of the design may apply to other pieces, such as the school’s e-newsletter and internal newsletter templates. This led to our work on establishing a brand for other print materials including approach to typography, color, graphics, photography, and illustration.

With the redesigned alumni magazine in circulation and a new website just launched, Stoltze was tasked with developing overall brand guidelines for HSDM which included refining the identity and the brand architecture. We formalized the font system and color palette, developed a set of icons and patterns, and created layouts and templates for various applications, all presented in a new graphic identity style guide.
